Professional Pastoral Supervision

What is Pastoral Supervision?

Professional Pastoral Supervision is a structured, confidential space for pastors and ministry leaders to reflect on their ministry practice, wellbeing and the challenges that come with leadership.

Unlike coaching, mentoring or counselling, supervision focuses specifically on you in the context of your ministry. With a trained supervisor, you can step outside the day-to-day demands of leadership and think more deeply about what you’re experiencing, how it is affecting you, and how you want to respond.

The supervisor’s role isn’t to tell you what to do. They help you reflect, notice what you might be missing, ask better questions and work through situations with greater clarity and perspective.

Is Pastoral Supervision for me?

Pastoral supervision is for pastors and ministry leaders who want a confidential space to reflect on the realities of ministry. You don’t need to be in crisis or facing a particular problem to benefit from it.

Ministry involves carrying responsibility for people, navigating complex relationships, making difficult decisions and managing the emotional demands of leadership. Supervision creates space away from those day-to-day pressures to consider what you’re experiencing, how it’s affecting you, and what might need your attention.

It can support you through challenging seasons, but it can also simply become part of a healthy rhythm of ministry, helping you develop greater self-awareness, maintain healthy boundaries and lead sustainably over the long term.

You don’t need to wait until something is wrong. Regular supervision gives you space to reflect, process and pay attention to your own practice while continuing to care well for others.

What happens in a Pastoral Supervision session?

A pastoral supervision session is shaped around what is happening in your ministry and what would be most useful to explore. There’s no set agenda you need to prepare and no expectation that you arrive with everything figured out.

You might bring a challenging pastoral situation, a difficult relationship, a decision you’re working through, questions around boundaries or workload, or something in ministry that has stayed with you.

Your supervisor will help you slow things down, look at the situation from different perspectives and notice what might be sitting beneath the surface. Through thoughtful questions and reflection, you’ll have space to consider what you’re learning about yourself, your ministry practice and how you want to move forward.

Sessions are confidential and focused on creating a safe, constructive space for honest reflection.

You bring what’s happening in ministry. Your supervisor helps you make space to reflect on it.
